My name is Darlene Haskins and I am from California. I moved to NC in 2009. My career has almost always involved swimming. My first job was working as a lifeguard and swim instructor in 1995, when I was 16. I then obtained my Early Childhood Education Certificate in 2000. I operated an in home preschool and taught in many educational facilities. My favorite was a Montessori school here in Kernersville. During this time I continued to lifeguard and teach swimming at the local YMCA. It was here I realized there was a desire for something beyond the Mommy and Me classes offered. This led me to research ISR. After watching videos (I think this is the story you told me) I immediately knew I had to teach the vital skill.
I applied to become an instructor and was accepted in 2013 and completed all training in 2014. Through ISR I became increasingly educated on water safety and drowning statistics. I turned into a strong advocate for survival swim lessons and educating on the layers of drowning prevention. While teaching ISR, I soon became aware of a need for safety training and swim lessons for parents and older siblings. I then obtained my American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.
In order to extend my efforts in the community I started the 501 (c)(3) Nonprofit Hand In Hand Water Safety Awareness Foundation. Our mission is to equip all people with survival swimming skills along with water safety skills to prevent drowning related accidents. Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death in ages 1-4 and number two in ages 5-15. Knowing how to swim is a life skill that EVERYONE needs. Drowning is preventable! America averages almost 11 drowning deaths EVERY DAY. It doesn't stop there, globally there are at least 380,000 drownings every year!
I am a class of 2016 alumni of the Chamber Of Commerce’s Leadership Kernersville. I also enjoy volunteering with Habitat for various community organizations.
My name is Angela and I am an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor with Safe Swim. I am a mother of 3 kids & a furbaby! I was born in Germany, but it is in Panama, Central America that I started avidly swimming. I was part of a synchronized swim team and enjoyed it very much! I started first by volunteering with Darlene but when I saw her dedication to saving lives, I decided to join her. Working with children makes me smile every day and I'm so blessed to be part of this organization.
In my spare time, I volunteer with Hand in Hand water Safety Awareness Foundation and Triad Pink Heals.
Hi my name is Mae McCoy. I am from Orange County, California. I grew up 20 minutes from the beach so inevitably swimming turned from an interest to a passion of mine. My dream ever since I was little was to become a lifeguard at my hometown beach. However, in 2014 I moved to North Carolina before that dream could become a reality. When I learned of Safe Swim NC, I knew I wanted to join the team. In April 2019 I became a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. I thought lifeguarding was my dream job, but the skills I help teach are priceless. All of Darlene's hard work serve as such an inspiration to help prevent drownings in our community.
Hi my name is Celeste Haskins, I am married to Ryen Haskins (Darlene's son). I joined Safe a Swim NC in 2019 as Office Manager and I now am a Certified American Red Cross Instructor as well. I come from a family of swimmers and was taught to swim at a young age. In 2016 I accepted a job lifeguarding and teaching water fitness and swim classes at the local YMCA. It was this job that led me to recognize my love for helping others learn to swim. I adore all the kids in this incredible program. Nothing beats seeing them having fun while learning crucial life saving skills.
Hi! I'm Ryen Haskins and I'm 21 years old & Darlene is my Mother. I'm currently an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor for Safe Swim NC. I grew up with a pool in my backyard and have always had a passion for swimming. I was a lifeguard at Camp Raven Knob scout camp and also taught swim lessons there. I started with Safe Swim 3 years ago when I decided to follow my passion for educating others about water safety. My favorite part of teaching is when I see the look on a child's face when they swim for the first time on their own! I am currently completing the ISR certification and will be ready to teach March 2020. I look forward to meeting you and your child(ren)!
