This passion really began when I first started working as a lifeguard and swim instructor in high school. I went on to obtain my Early Childhood Education certificate, operated a large in-home preschool, and taught in a variety of facilities including, my favorite, a Montessori school. During this time, I continued to lifeguard and teach swimming at the YMCA. I was asked by several families if there were any ISR instructors in the area - it became apparent that there was a desire for something more than the mommy and me classes available. After researching ISR, I applied to become an instructor, was accepted in 2013, and trained in 2014.
Through ISR, I became increasingly educated on water safety and drowning statistics and have become a strong advocate for survival swim lessons and educating on the layers of drowning prevention. I soon recognized amongst the families I taught a need for safety training and swim lessons for parents and older siblings and obtained my American Red Cross Instructor Certification for Water Safety/Swim and CPR/First Aid/AED Adult and Pediatric. Wanting to further my efforts in our community and beyond, I launched the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Hand in Hand Water Safety Awareness Foundation, with the mission to equip all people with survival swimming skills and water safety best practices to prevent drowning-related accidents.
My husband, children, and I are very community-oriented, and scouting is a passion of ours. I am a Class of 2016 alumni of the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Kernersville and enjoy volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, Shepherd's Center, Senior Center, and Relay for Life.
My name is Angela I'm an American Red Cross instructor. I started with Safe Swim NC in 2017 and I love it! I volunteered with Darlene at first and fell in love with her passion for water safety! And so I knew I was right where I was supposed to be. I love children and being able to educate families in the community on water safety awareness. My passion for swimming began when I lived in Panama (Central America) and I did synchronized swimming as my sport. I'm a mother of three I have 2 sons and a daughter. I’m originally from Germany.
I volunteer with Hand in Hand water Safety Awareness Foundation and Triad Pink Heals.
Hi, My Name is Mae McCoy. I am originally from Orange County, California. Growing up I loved to spend time in the water. With the beach only being 20 minutes away naturally my love for swimming grew into a passion. I had always dreamed of being a lifeguard at my hometown beach. However, I moved to North Carolina in 2014. My passion for swimming and helping others eventually lead me to Safe Swim NC. Seeing what Darlene has created here has motivated me to help my community as well. I joined Safe Swim NC in March 2019 and in April I became an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
